Paddle board size chart by weight and height

Quick answerA 150 lb beginner needs about 145 litres on a 10'6" x 32" board; a 200 lb beginner about 191 litres on 11' x 33"; a 250 lb beginner about 236 litres on 11'6" x 34". Add width before length if you feel unstable.

Match the row that fits you, then check the listing's own dimensions and rated capacity.

Paddle board size is three numbers: volume (how much the board floats), width (how stable it feels side to side) and length (how straight it tracks). Weight drives all three; height only matters for very tall riders. The volume rule behind the chart is litres = (rider + gear in kg) x 2.0 for beginners, 1.6 for intermediate and 1.25 for advanced paddlers.

Inflatable boards should be 6 inches thick. A 4 inch inflatable flexes under an adult and feels far less stable than its width suggests. Always check the rated capacity too: the chart's last column is the total load divided by 0.7, so you stay in the top 70 percent of the board's rating where it still rides high.

Frequently asked questions

What size paddle board do I need for my weight?

Multiply your weight plus gear in kilograms by 2 for a beginner board volume in litres. A 180 lb rider with 10 lb of gear needs about 172 litres, which is a 10'6" x 32" inflatable rated for at least 280 lb. Heavier riders should add width first: 34 to 35 inches above 250 lb.

Does height matter for paddle board size?

Much less than weight. Height changes your centre of gravity, so riders over about 6'2" feel more stable on a board around 6 inches longer than the chart suggests for their weight. Short riders do not need a shorter board unless they are also light, when a 10 foot board is easier to carry and turn.

Is a 10'6" paddle board good for beginners?

10'6" x 32 to 33 inches is the standard beginner all-round size and suits riders up to about 200 lb. Past 200 lb, move to 11 feet and 33 to 34 inches wide; past 250 lb, 11'6" and 34 to 35 inches with a 400 lb or higher rating.

What paddle board volume do I need?

Beginners want roughly 2 litres per kilogram of total load, intermediate paddlers 1.6 and advanced paddlers 1.25. Inflatable listings rarely print volume, so use width, thickness and rated capacity as the proxy: 6 inches thick and at least your total load divided by 0.7.

What is the standard paddle board size?

The most common all-round inflatable is 10'6" long, 32 to 33 inches wide and 6 inches thick, with a stated capacity of 300 to 450 lb. It suits most riders between about 120 and 220 lb on flat water.

On the water: Wear a properly fitted, USCG-approved life jacket every time, dress for the water temperature rather than the air, and check your state and local paddling regulations before you launch.
